Reading: “The Diggings” by Claire Vaye Watkins
Impressions: This story was rich with details that created a vivid picture of the setting of this story. I could feel the heaviness of the main character’s life as a 49er. The author not only painted the physical setting (dust, heat, lack of water, etc.), she also gave clues to the charged atmosphere that the brothers were in–the desperation of all the prospectors, the feelings of suspicions and distrust, and Erroll’s fragile mental state.
I was surprised at how patient and devoted Joshua was to his brother. He endured an awful lot for the sake of pleasing his brother.
