Reading: Paper Losses by Lorrie Moore
Impressions: My first thoughts are this is a sad story, a tough one to swallow. It’s always tough to read about how a relationship comes apart, especially one like this. The decline of the marriage relationship in this story is slow and agonizing but I suppose that’s what it’s like in real life, much like watching a train wreck in super-slow motion.
You can also see how the wife stopped trying and stopped caring a long time before any final decisions were made. I don’t know how the mechanics of this work, but I felt like the outcome of the story was inevitable, as if it was a ball rolling down a hill.
The best line of the story is the last sentence, sad but powerful.
